Student Accessibility Services

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) staff provides support and services to students with temporary and/or permanent disabilities. Accommodations are provided on an individual basis, supported by each student’s disability related functional limitations. Accommodations are meant to remove barriers and level the playing field for students with temporary and/or permanent disabilities and/or medical conditions while meeting the essential requirements and maintaining the academic integrity of their course or program.

TBSASA Counselling & Crisis Centre

The Thunder Bay Sexual Assault/Sexual Abuse Counselling and Crisis Centre is a non-profit, stand-alone agency; independent of the hospital, courts and police.

The agency provides:

  • Counselling (brief, short term and long term (up to one year)

Law Student Member Assistance Program funded by and independent of the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC)

  • A variety of free and confidential 24/7 support services are available, including confidential short term counselling for Ontario law students and their immediate family members and  ”referrals for specialized addictions, sexual assault and psychiatric diagnoses ”
  • Other service offerings include e-counselling, health and wellness companion, access to the health library, child and eldercare resources, and interactive learning courses

A non-profit initiative of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) dedicated to improving the mental health of children, youth and families; offers a wide selection of fact sheets and assessments for adults and children.

Comprehensive list of online screening tools that may help identify whether further assistance might be required. Note that this does not replace seeking help from a health professional. Screening tools for adults include: alcohol, gambling or substance use problems, anxiety disorders,  social anxiety, ADHD in adults, Autism Spectrum Disorder in adults, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, seasonal affective disorder and depression, schizophrenia and psychosis, sleep problems and disorders, eating disorders, domestic violence, and general mental health, among others.

Mood Disorders Association of Ontario

Offers free support and recovery programs to people across Ontario living with depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. Provides drop-in peer support groups, recovery programs, family and youth clinical support, early intervention for mood disorders and psychosis and online tools focused on wellness and recovery.

Online assessment, “Check Up From The Neck Up”, can identify some symptoms of depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. Note that this does not replace seeking appropriate medical advice.

Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres – Online Resource

Online resource offering some online resources for survivors. Also provides community-based referrals to rape crisis centres in Ontario. All centres provide free and confidential counselling, information and support services to survivors of sexual violence. Services may include face-to-face counselling, a 24-hour crisis line, group counselling, assistance navigating legal proceedings, information on other community resources, and information and support for partners, families and friends of survivors.
